My name is Sam Malone. A soldier in the U.S Army. I am 21 years old today. Vietnam is a hot and humid place with thick jungles and with that it is infested with buzzing insects that might kill you before the bullets.

Days ago, I woke up to the sound of blaring explosions and ear deafening gunshots. I had to act fast. Before I knew it, I was on the run. Looking at my watch, I saw that it was exactly 3 a.m. when I rummaged through my tent and quickly put on a singlet and my green army pants. Outside was more dread with copious bullets piercing through the air noisily and striking down the last of our soldiers. My left ear was grazed by one but apart from a bloody earlobe, I’m still standing.

First thing was to look for my comrades. When I came out of the tent, I realised I was alone, surrounded by enemies in their territory and there was no way to Escape. In fact, there was nowhere that was not their territory and the place was covered in booby traps. One wrong move and I’ll be caught.

The smell of smoke and gun powder filled my nostrils, making it hard to breathe. Stifling and thick smoky air whirled around me, yet I moved swiftly  with only half a bottle of water near my waist. Where I was earlier was a place where the last members of our regiment had set camp after the bloody war had devoured all our good men, leaving too few to fight in this destructive war.
