I stood in front of the whitewashed old brick house. I felt nostalgic walking down memory lane and the sights and sounds of the place came flooding in from a long-ago memory. My mind wandered and I saw images of playful kids and their laughter in the sweet-smelling garden filled with daisies and marigolds that were broods of shaggy suns but now they were overgrown, flowerless and shrivelled up. The house was only a shadow of its former self and what I saw was more like the ground of a graveyard. The door of the house was an old wooden unfastened piece of wood that hung loosely and swung about when the wind blew making a rhythmic sound. I looked inside and what I saw filled me with a sense of melancholy. The place was dark with tall overgrown creepers covering the walls like wallpaper. There were bats screeching and swooping over my head. It was frightening and it made my skin crawl. My legs wobbled like jelly. There was a mixture of joy from the memories of long ago and the pain of seeing my friend’s house left in shambles. I squished a dead little bird under my foot and the repulsive sight of crawling, squiggly maggots made me want to gag. I hopped about in a mad frenzy trying to recover from the smell and tip toed my way across the place. This experience rattled my bones and I had to leave the dungeon like claustrophobic place as fast as I could. Thank You for reading the story till here.
